Wilmington Police celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunications Week:

The Wilmington Police Department is joining agencies across the country in observing National Public Safety Telecommunications Week from April 9 to 15.

Each year dating back to 1981, agencies have set aside a week to recognize telecommunications personnel in the public safety community across the country.

The Wilmington Police Department’s Communications Division is staffed by 38 employees and supervisors who work to provide 24-hour coverage to answer emergency calls and dispatch police officers.

In 2022, the Division received 92,511 9-1-1 calls and handled 140,130 other incoming and outgoing calls. Call takers and dispatchers are supported by supervisors who manage the team, fill in when needed and provide continuous training.

“As we celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, we celebrate our dedicated members who work 24/7, 365 days a year, providing outstanding service and support to Wilmington’s community,” said Lt. Christopher Vitale, commanding officer of the WPD Communications Division. “No call for service is too small or scene too large for our professional telecommunication teams to provide first-rate direction and support. Sometimes our public servants go unnoticed behind the scenes, however, without them the quality and effectiveness of our first responders would be diminished. I commend them for their unwavering commitment and excellence in all they do.”

Chief Wilfredo Campos expressed his appreciation for the dedication of each of the professionals who work in our Communications Division.

“Whether it involves gathering and relaying information about emergencies and crime, or providing instruction to callers about how to perform CPR or render basic first aid, our highly-trained call takers and dispatchers are a key component of our service to Wilmington,” said Chief Campos. “We appreciate the commitment of this team, and thank them for the work they do to support our agency and community.”
