Mayor & IMPD Visit the Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) to Promote Recruiting Efforts

INDANAPOLIS -- Today Mayor Joe Hogsett along with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Randal Taylor came together with the Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) to discuss IMPD’s application process, benefits, and opportunities with members. Mayor Hogsett and IMPD leadership say the goal of these visits is to promote IMPD’s recruitment efforts in communities that are typically underrepresented in law enforcement.

“The City of Indianapolis is committed to fully staffing IMPD for our community,” said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. “Not only does that include raising starting salaries to some of the highest in the Midwest, but it also means approaching communities who have not traditionally seen themselves reflected in law enforcement.”
During Thursday’s event, IMPD recruiters were on-hand to speak with members, walk them through the application process and discuss the department’s various benefits and opportunities.

“We’re here today to let our neighbors in the Burmese community know that IMPD is hiring dedicated and compassionate individuals right now. With the financial and professional opportunities available to new recruits and lateral officers, there has never been a better time to become a police officer in Indianapolis,” said IMPD Chief Randal Taylor.”

“We are excited to host Mayor Hogsett and IMPD Chief Taylor today at our headquarters as they look to hire more police officers. We know when our police department reflects our community, the better it is for everyone,” said BACI Executive Director Elaisa Vahnie.

IMPD officers earn over $75,000 after 24 months, get paid during the academy, receive overtime pay, and have the opportunity to serve in various specialty units like SWAT or K9.

IMPD is continuing its recruitment campaign which features digital, radio and social media advertisements. In the coming weeks, Indianapolis residents can expect to see TV commercials that showcase what it means to be an IMPD officer.
IMPD encourages all individuals who meet the department’s initial requirements to apply at JoinIMPD.indy.gov

IMPD is actively recruiting for the 28th Recruit Class that will begin December 11, 2023. Applicants have until April 15, 2023, to apply. IMPD’s 27th Recruit Class will begin and July and graduate in January 2024.

IMPD’s 26th Recruit Class began in March and graduate September 15, 2023.
