Wilmington Police warn vehicle owners of theft, attempted theft and criminal mischief incidents affecting Hyundai and Kia models: 
In recent months, our agency has received multiple reports of vehicle thefts, attempted vehicle thefts and criminal mischief incidents involving some Hyundai and Kia vehicles that is believed to be related to a social media trend.
These are similar in nature to theft and attempted theft incidents that have been reported by law enforcement agencies across the country.
Police continue to urge motorists not to leave their vehicles unattended while running, or while keys are inside of the vehicle. Police also remind drivers to avoid leaving any valuables in plain sight, and to be mindful of spare or valet keys that might be left in their vehicles that could potentially result in a theft.
Owners of Hyundai and Kia vehicles affected by a reported software issue that can facilitate theft, are encouraged to contact a dealership about a possible remedy. Vehicle owners can also obtain other anti-theft devices to help prevent theft.
Anyone who observes suspicious activity is also encouraged to contact police.
