INDIANAPOLIS – Just before 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2023, an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officer was investigating a possible stolen vehicle. The officer was traveling behind the vehicle when it turned onto the 5300 block of Sutton Street. As the officer continued to follow, the vehicle stopped at the road's dead end. The driver then quickly exited the vehicle and fired multiple shots striking the officer's fully marked police vehicle. The officer exited his vehicle and took cover until other officers could arrive.
After shots were fired, officers briefly lost sight of the suspect. A short time later, the adult male returned and surrendered to officers. IMPD officers safely approached and took the suspect into custody without further incident. IMPD officers did not discharge their firearms during this incident. Neither the officers nor the suspect was injured during this incident.
Homicide Investigators from the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) have taken the lead on the criminal investigation, which is standard procedure in an investigation involving shots fired at a law enforcement officer. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to assist in identifying and collecting potential forensic evidence.
The officer's body-worn camera was activated at the time of this incident.
Further investigation revealed the shots fired did strike an unoccupied residence and a vehicle.
Detectives located two firearms near the suspect (a photo of both firearms is attached).
Detectives are confident there is no ongoing threat to the community. No suspect is outstanding regarding this incident. Investigators continue to canvass the area for witnesses and other evidence.
After further investigation, IMPD Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) detectives arrested the suspect for criminal recklessness. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will review this case and make the final charging decision.
