Police Arrest Newark Man, Two Juveniles, Recover Stolen Handgun in Police-Involved Shooting

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé reports the arrest of Jmahri Grimes-Wallace, 19, of Newark, along with two 15-year-old males, and the recovery of a stolen handgun, in connection with a police-involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, March 29, 2023.
 
At approximately 10 p.m., detectives patrolling the area of Clifford Street and Pulaski Street observed four individuals, all dressed in black clothing and wearing ski-masks that covered their faces, standing near a red Hyundai with its rear driver’s side window broken. Upon observing police presence, the four individuals walked away from the vehicle before running onto Malvern Street. When detectives approached the individuals in the 200 block of Malvern Street, one of the individuals brandished a weapon and fired at the detectives before the group ran away again. No injuries have been reported.
 
Grimes-Wallace and one of the juveniles were apprehended in a rear yard in the 300 block of Chestnut Street. Grimes-Wallace was found in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun that was reported stolen out of Richmond County, Georgia. He was also found in possession of CDS cocaine and heroin. The second juvenile was apprehended in the 200 block of Delancy Street.
 
Grimes-Wallace faces charges of criminal attempt, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon (ball point ammunition and large capacity magazine), possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, resisting arrest, CDS possession, CDS distribution, CDS distribution within 1,000 ft. of a school, and CDS distribution within 500 ft. of a park.
 
The two juveniles are each charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of the administration of the law.
