In recognition that April is Autism Awareness Month, we'd like to remind our community about Project Guardian. Project Guardian was created as a free, voluntary registry where caregivers or family can provide confidential information about a loved one who may have autism, Alzheimer's, intellectual, physical, or developmental disabilities, or any diagnosis that may make a person vulnerable.
We know there are members of our community who may wander, be frightened of the police, or react differently when contacted by public safety personnel. By providing confidential information to us via the registry, the supply of information will help officers potentially locate vulnerable people faster or prevent causing undue stress and aggravation by alerting responding officers they are about to encounter a person who has a condition that may affect our response. The goal is to use the information to help calm, locate, or help someone unable to communicate effectively in an emergency.

To register the vulnerable person in your life, visit https://www.cityofsanmateo.org/4657/Project-Guardian. There you will provide detailed information and upload a photo. Once the information is entered into our database, we will send a decal in return that you can post at the front of your home, alerting public safety personnel that a vulnerable person resides inside.

The confidential database is maintained by the police department and we respect the right to privacy and will make every attempt to ensure all personal information remains confidential, unless release of the information is required by law.
