Please be advised, diamondback terrapin nesting season has begun on Jekyll Island. Although terrapin nesting season is not recognized to begin until May 1st, this is the earliest sighting of nesting activity on the causeway since our team has been monitoring and patrols have now begun.
Upon crossing the causeway, please be alert for diamondback terrapins now through July, as they leave the marsh to nest. Turtle crossing signs are visible on the causeway and flash only when a high volume of terrapins is expected. However, terrapins may be seen at any time. Please use caution and follow speed limit signage.
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center staff will be monitoring the causeway daily during nesting season. Should you see a terrapin, or have a concern, we encourage you to save this phone number and alert the Center directly at 912-635-4070.
Please remember that swerving to miss terrapins and/or exiting a vehicle to assist a terrapin are both significant hazards and you should prioritize your own safety on the road.
