Calaveras Graduates (5) Deputies from the Police Academy

Calaveras Graduates (5) Deputies from the Police Academy
     The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the graduation of five deputies from the San Joaquin Delta College Police Academy. Six months of rigorous training included extensive instruction on criminal law, constitutional law, traffic law, patrol procedures, firearms, defensive driving, de-escalation efforts, and first aid. Of particular note in this graduating class, Calaveras Deputy Mireya Ortega earned the “Female Lifetime Fitness Award”. Physical fitness, particularly in law enforcement, can be crucially beneficial in many situations.
        After a brief office orientation period, the new deputies will begin their Field Training Program. During this time, commonly referred to as FTO, new deputies are paired with a Corporal (training deputy) to receive comprehensive training designed to prepare them to perform as effective and competent deputy sheriff. Training on the FTO program typically lasts several months and consists of classroom instruction and hands-on training.
 Sheriff DiBasilio plans to continue sponsoring recruits through police academies in order to maintain adequate staffing levels.  Appropriate staffing levels can;

  • Improve response times: Sufficient staffing on duty per shift will allow deputies to respond to calls for service more quickly and efficiently, which can help to improve public safety and reduce crime.
  • Enhance community engagement by allocating resources to community policing initiatives such as increased neighborhood patrols, Neighborhood Watch Programs, education programs for school aged children, and other community orientated activities.
  • Increased officer safety.  Often, when understaffed, deputies are required to work long shifts with little time off. This can increase the risk of burnout, on-the-job injuries and have an impact on their overall health and wellness.
  • Greater investigative capacity.  The ability to investigate crimes to their fullest diminishes as the caseload per deputy increases.
Sheriff DiBasilio will be sponsoring a new group of recruit deputies in the next academy.  Persons interested in a carrier in law enforcement with the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office should visit the department recruiting web site.   https://joincalaverassheriff.com/  or call Lieutenant Greg Stark 209-754-6783 or Lieutenant Kevin Stevens 209-754-6028.
