Incident Summary

On Friday, April 7, 2023, at approximately 0105 hours, personnel from the Petaluma Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of East Washington Street and South McDowell Boulevard to investigate a vehicle collision. A reporting party, who had witnessed the collision informed Petaluma Police Dispatch that a blue pickup had fled the scene, westbound on East Washington Street. The reporting party followed the pickup westbound over the East Washington Street overpass and observed the driver and passenger switch seats, as the vehicle was stopped in the middle of the roadway. The pickup travelled toward Kenilworth Drive and drove through the East Washington Plaza Shopping Center. The reporting party continued to follow the vehicle and provided updates to Petaluma Police Dispatch. The driver proceeded toward Lindberg Lane and eventually turned into the Gateway Shopping Center and parked. Officers located the vehicle and detained two juvenile occupants (15 years old and 16 years old) without incident.

Based on the information that had been provided by the reporting party, the juvenile passenger was questioned regarding the collision. During the investigation officers noted the juvenile showed objective signs of intoxication and conducted a DUI investigation. At the conclusion of the investigation, it was determined the juvenile was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and he was placed under arrest. A search of the vehicle yielded additional bottles of alcohol and marijuana.

The juvenile was later cited and released to a guardian for the following charges: 23152(a)(b) CVC-Driving Under the Influence of alcohol / 20002(a) CVC-Hit and Run Causing Property Damage / 11357(a) H&S-Unlawful Possession of Marijuana / 25662(a) B&P-Minor in Possession of Alcohol.
