Pepin County Flooding Updates for Chippewa & Mississippi Rivers

Chippewa River: The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities has issued a flood warning affecting property along the Chippewa River in Pepin County.
 
Impacts: The forecast indicates minor to moderate flooding can be expected through Tuesday April 18th, 2023. Waters are estimated to rise to above 15 feet on the flood gauge. Flooding is expected to submerge River Street in the City of Durand and could enter basements of businesses along Main Street. County Road P is closed from Highway 10 to County Road O, South Kirk Road is also closed to through traffic due to flooding.

Mississippi River: The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities will be issuing a flood warning affecting the Lake Pepin portion of the Mississippi River later this week.
 
Impacts: The forecast currently indicates minor to moderate flooding can be expected in the next week. Waters are estimated to rise to 17 feet on the Lake City gauge by April 18, 2023, waters may continue to rise after that date. Lowland flooding is expected including potential impacts to properties adjacent to the Mississippi River including Deer Island, Pepin Marina, Stockholm Village Park, and Barney’s Point.
 
Individuals in these areas should start taking precautionary steps to protect their property, including:

  • Move recreational vehicles out of the floodplain
  • Anchor propane tanks
  • Elevate all utilities and appliances above base flood elevation
  • Secure all accessory structures and personal property that could be carried by flood waters
  • Monitor flood gauges for changes in flood forecast via the National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service
