Dispatch Appreciation Week
This week, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office joins the rest of the country in celebrating Dispatcher Appreciation Week.  This annual event, which takes place during the second week of April, honors the women and men who are the lifeline between the public and first responders.  These men and women staff the call centers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays.  These specially trained workers are always ready to answer the call, literally, not knowing what will be dealt to them on the other end of the line.  Dispatchers are often the first point of contact with people and play a critical role in ensuring that emergency services are dispatched quickly and efficiently.  They are the calm voice on the line during an emergency and ensure the safety of deputies and citizens. They are responsible for answering 911 calls, gathering vital information, and coordinating the responses of law enforcement, fire, medical personnel, and guiding calls through CPR.  Dispatchers are the unsung heroes of emergency services.
 Dispatchers often work at minimum staffing levels consisting of two dispatchers per shift.  With only two dispatchers to answer the multitude of phone calls, dispatch all law enforcement within the county, dispatch all medics within the county, and monitor several other radio channels, the dispatchers take the definition of multitasking to another level.  In 2022 the CCSO dispatch center received 43,657 calls, which equates to approximately 3,658 a month.
