UPDATE - CARJACKING LEADS TO OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING
Newark, California (Friday, April 14, 2023)
On Thursday, April 13, 2023, at approximately 4:46 p.m., members of the Newark Police Department and Fremont Police Department were involved in an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) in the 39000 block of Cedar Boulevard. Newark Police Department Detectives are continuing to actively investigate this case. Per protocol, independent investigations are being conducted by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and the Newark Police Department’s Professional Standards and Training Unit.
Additionally, pursuant to Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), the California Department of Justice (DOJ) was contacted and the DOJ’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team will investigate and independently review the OIS. The OIS incident resulted in the death of one individual and occurred while attempting to take a carjacking suspect into custody.
Due to the complexity of these types of investigations, they can take a substantial amount of time to complete. We will release more information as it becomes available.
