IMPD Homicide Detectives Make Arrest in a 2022 Murder Investigation.
On April 11, 2023, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Homicide detectives served 22-year-old Dorean Petty with an arrest warrant for his alleged involvement in a 2022 homicide.
On Sunday, August 21, 2022, just after 12:00 am, IMPD Downtown District officers were dispatched to the 900 block of N. Delaware Street on a report of a person shot. Officers arrived and located an adult male, later identified as 19-year-old Rodney Hanley, with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound(s). Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) arrived and transported Hanley to an area hospital in critical condition. Shortly after arrived at the hospital he was pronounced deceased.
Subsequently, IMPD Downtown District officers also received a report of a walk-in person shot in the 900 block of Fort Wayne Avenue (Indianapolis Fire Department Headquarters) and a walk-in person shot at Eskenazi Hospital. Further investigation revealed those two individuals were also shot in the 900 block of N. Delaware Street.
IMPD homicide detectives responded to the scene and began the investigation. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to identify and collect potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner's Office assisted and determined the cause of death to be homicide.
The investigation continued and detectives were able to identify Petty as the suspect in this case. On April 10, 2023, with assistance from the Marion County Prosecutors office, an arrest warrant was issued. Investigators learned that Petty was currently being held in the Marion County Criminal Justice Center on unrelated charges.
On April 11, 2023, Petty was served with his arrest warrant for murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, and unlawful carrying of a handgun.
