Register for Art in the Park & theater programs

Youth theater classes begin in May

The City of Hoboken and Mile Square Theatre will partner to provide acting classes to Hoboken residents between 6 and 17 years old this May. 

Mile Square Theatre Teaching Artists will teach children the basics of acting through energetic theater games and character work as well as creative improvisation and more.   

The four-week course is $50 per student. Space is limited.

Class details are as follows:   

Theatre Games 101  
Ages: 6 – 9 years old   
Dates: Tuesdays, from May 2 – May 23  
Time: 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. 
Where: Mile Square Theatre, Studio B, 1400 Clinton St.
In this fast-paced introduction to theater games, we’ll learn the fundamentals of creative improvisation, beginning with the all-important “yes, and…” From there, we’ll learn how to create scenes using a wide variety of techniques, formats, and games. Class will culminate in a presentation for family and friends. 

Theatre Games 101  
Ages: 10 – 13 years old   
Dates: Tuesdays, from May 2 – May 23  
Time: 4:45 – 5:45 p.m.  
Where: Mile Square Theatre, Studio B, 1400 Clinton St.

Playwriting for Teens   
Ages: 13 – 17 years old   
Dates: Fridays, from May 5 – May 26  
Time: 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.  
Where: Mile Square Theatre, Studio A, 1400 Clinton St.
How do we tell stories on stage? Using exercises, students will work from conception to draft on an original short play. We explore “what story do we hope to tell and is that story being told?” Through positive feedback, students will work to sharpen and clarify their story. Class will culminate with a presentation for family and friends. 

Acting for Teens    
Ages: 13 – 17 years old    
Dates: Fridays, from May 5 – May 26   
Time: 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.   
Where: Mile Square Theatre, Studio A, 1400 Clinton St.   
Learn acting fundamentals in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Through energetic theater games and character work we’ll tackle the questions every actor must ask: “What’s my objective?” Class will culminate with a presentation for family and friends.  

Register for Art in the Park

Residents can still register for the City's Art in the Park program. The five-week, outdoor, creative arts program for children is designed for children between 1 and 4 years old. 

The program includes crafts, story time, music, sing-alongs, and more.

The cost for participants is $45 for five classes (45-minute sessions) and all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. 

Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Elysian Park and Wednesdays in Stevens Park beginning the week of June 20.
