Items of interest for April & May

The Village will not be publishing the Village Bulletin for the month of April. Below are some time sensitive items that were going to be included in the April issue that may be of interest to residents before the May Bulletin is published.

Swap & Donation Pickup Event
Join us this Saturday, April 22nd for the 3rd annual SWAP & DONATION PICK-UP events.
10:00 am-12:00 pm: A neighborhood SWAP! Place your unwanted household items & goods at the end of your driveway for your neighbors to take, and go hunting for new treasures to bring home! This is similar to a neighborhood garage sale but without the exchange of money - instead, to promote reducing, reusing, and recycling within our Village. No registration is required to participate in the Swap.
Beginning at 1:00 pm: Charitable Donation Pick-Ups! Visit the link below to see eligible donation items and sign up. Our partner charities Agrace and Goodwill will perform no-contact pick-ups directly from your driveway beginning at 1:00 pm. Registration is required. See eligible donation items & register here: https://www.shorewoodhillsgreenteam.org/events/earthday2023

No Mow May
Join the Village’s Green Team in celebrating “No Mow May”, which promotes pollinator-friendly habitat and awareness. Property owners are asked to refrain from mowing their lawns for the month of May. This allows lawn “weeds” - plants like violets, white clover, and dandelions - to flower. These flowers help provide early spring food for bees as they emerge from hibernation during a time when flower availability is limited. Free yard signs will be available at the Village Hall! Learn more about how you can get involved with this initiative here.

Garden Club Lunch & Learn
On Thursday, April 20, 2023 at 12:00 pm at the Village Hall, please plan to join the Garden Club for a lunch & learn discussion with Briana Frank, arborist and owner of Tree Health Management (https://treehealthmgmt.com/meet-the-team/). Bring your lunch. Bottled water will be provided.

Computer & Home Electronic Recycling Event
On Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, the EMS & Fire Association, in association with the Village’s Services Committee, will be conducting an e-cycle event at the old Fire Station (DPW Building). It is illegal to dispose of certain electronics in the trash. This Spring event is an easy way to dispose of your electronic waste. Computers and most home electronics can be dropped off for free. Our recycling partner charges a modest fee to recycle old computer monitors, TVs, copier/fax machines and window AC units because of the materials involved. We pass that fee along to you (ranging from $5-$60 per item based on size/weight). We can take dehumidifiers, small dorm room style refrigerators, etc. but there may be small pass-through fees for these items as well. Help keep potentially damaging materials out of our landfills by disposing of your old computer, TVs and other electronics on May 6.

Spring Cleaning Dumpster Event
The Village’s cleanup event is back this Spring. This year the event will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 5, 6, and 7. On those days, the Village will have two 30-yard dumpsters available outside the Public Works garage (1008 Shorewood Blvd.). From 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, residents may bring items that have been collecting over the winter or over the years and discard them once and for all (items not fit for donation, garage sales, or the Green Team’s Swap & Donation event). Also, a Public Works truck will be available for recyclable metal items. Most things can go in the dumpsters or metal recycling truck. But, we CAN’T take everything. Certain materials are banned from landfills because of their toxicity. Some materials may not be toxic but are prohibited for other reasons (for example: to encourage recycling).
Prohibited Materials: Appliances, Asphalt Shingles, Batteries, Brush/Grass/Leaves, Office Paper, Cardboard/Boxes, 30/55 Gallon Barrels/Drums, Fluorescent Bulbs, Light Fixtures, Hazardous/Infectious Materials, Oil & Oil Filters, Paint, Recyclables, Sharps/Needles, Tires, Dirt/Brick/Concrete, Asbestos.
