Advisory

Fraud Alert!

We have been informed by some residents of the Peninsula that someone called them, and the number on their Caller ID said it was the PVEPD (310-378-4211). The person claims to be one of our sergeants and even uses that sergeant’s name. The caller then asks questions about social security. DON’T BE TRICKED! This is not us calling, but someone using Caller ID “Spoofing” and a little internet research to find the name of our employees. According to the FCC, “Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity. Scammers often use neighbor spoofing so it appears that an incoming call is coming from a local number, or spoof a number from a company or a government agency that you may already know and trust. If you answer, they use scam scripts to try to steal your money or valuable personal information, which can be used in fraudulent activity.” If you are not certain who is calling you, you can always hang up, locate the number of the entity they are claiming to be from, and give them a call directly. For more information, you can visit Caller ID Spoofing | Federal Communications Commission (fcc.gov).
