Senior mental health programming announced

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Office of Constituent Services and the Department of Health and Human Services announced mental health programming for Hoboken seniors. Every Thursday in May from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Multi-Service Center, 124 Grand St., the City will offer seniors additional programming to help support their physical and mental wellbeing.

The schedule is as follows:

  • May 4 - Art Therapy
  • May 11 - Zumba Exercise Class
  • May 18 - Therapy Dog Visit
  • May 25 - Zumba Exercise Class

Attend extended office hours with Hoboken's social workers

While the City's social workers make rounds throughout the City on a regular basis, the Office of Constituent Services will have extended office hours with Hoboken’s social workers on Tuesday, May 9, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at City Hall, 94 Washington St.

Hoboken's social workers help residents connect with community resources for mental health concerns, those experiencing homelessness, and those facing food insecurity, and much more.

Attendees should enter City Hall from the Newark Street entrance. No appointment is required.

Womens Wellness Fair announced

The Office of Constituent Services will host a Women's Wellness Fair on May 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Multi-Service Center, 124 Grand St.

The event will include free mammograms for those who qualify, tabling by several community partners, and kid friendly activities.

The fair is sponsored by Hoboken Family Planning, CarePoint, and the City of Hoboken.

April 29 and April 30 rain event recap

  • Rainstorm had a peak intensity of up to 0.92 inches an hour; low-lying areas of Hoboken can experience flooding if the City receives more than 0.8 inches of rain per hour.
  • Hoboken experienced 5.61 inches of rain between Saturday at 12:01 a.m. and Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
  • The H1 and H5 pump stations were online during the storm and pumped out 51.2 million gallons of water.
  • City’s underground water retention systems in resiliency parks also ran normally and filled with stormwater.

During the height of the storm, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) placed barricades at flood-prone areas to prevent drivers from traveling through flooded intersections and streets, which can push water into lower-level apartments and businesses causing damage. The City would like to thank residents for heeding the warnings and for not driving around the barricades.

The installation of the City's new automated flood warning system continues this week, with anticipated construction of electrical connections, testing, and training for first responders. The purpose of the flood warning system is not to prevent flooding from occurring (click here for Hoboken’s comprehensive flood mitigation strategies), but rather to prevent vehicles from driving down streets that have experienced flooding and may be impassable; protecting residents and property, and improving the City’s emergency response to severe weather events.

You can find updates on construction of the system and learn more about the project, which was funded with American Rescue Plan funding, at: www.hobokennj.gov/construction.
