SMPD Arrests A Shooting Suspect

San Mateo, CA - On April 14, 2023, at approximately 12:58 a.m., SMPD patrol officers responded to the unit block of 37th Avenue on the report of a shooting.

SMPD immediately launched an investigation at the scene. After interviewing witnesses and reviewing video surveillance, officers learned a group of three unknown suspects had an altercation with two males inside a bar. One of the three suspects punched one of the other males in the face. The fight continued outside the bar, and one of the suspects retrieved a firearm from a vehicle. The suspect fired one round toward the sky and then fired two to three more rounds at the ground. One of the rounds aimed at the ground grazed a 26-year-old male victim who had a minor scrape to his ankle. The three suspects fled the scene in two vehicles prior to SMPD’s arrival.

SMPD continued the investigation and quickly identified the shooter as Diego Perez-Pinzon. During the early morning hours on May 3, 2023, SMPD arrested Perez-Pinzon without incident near his residence in Redwood City, CA. Perez-Pinzon was booked into the San Mateo County Jail for assault with a firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm, criminal threats, exhibiting a firearm, possession of a firearm by a person on probation, and carrying a loaded firearm.

Remember, “If you see something, say something.” We’re encouraging our community to utilize security cameras.  They are especially helpful identifying suspicious activity in neighborhoods when cameras are street facing.
