On May 9, 2023, at approximately 9:15 a.m., the Gilroy Police Department received a report of a shooting in the field area between Gilman Road and Camino Arroyo. When the officers arrived on scene, they learned the victim was confronted by a suspect who was upset over being asked to leave the property. The suspect refused to leave and produced a firearm and fired a single round that hit the ground near the victim.
The suspect fled into the nearby creek area. The suspect was later found hiding inside a tent and was arrested without incident. During the investigation, two firearms were located and recovered.
The suspect was identified as Cesar Augusto Acevedo-Alvarez, 40, a Gilroy resident. Acevedo was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for charges related to the shooting.
