NEWS MEDIA INFORMATION REPORT

SUBJECT OF RELEASE:  Crashes Involving Serious Injuries.

DATE AND TIME:  May 9 and May 10, 2023.

LOCATION:  Evergreen and Montcalm Townships.

AUTHORITY/CONTACT PERSON:  Sheriff Mike Williams

The Sheriff’s Office investigated two traffic crashes in as many days that both resulted in serious injuries being sustained.

The first crash occurred at approximately 8:45 P.M. on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, on Sidney Road near Tow Road in Evergreen Township.  The investigation determined that a 2021 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by a 51-year-old man from Alma, was headed east on Sidney Road and failed to negotiate the curve at Tow Road.  The motorcycle left the roadway and came to a rest in a grassy area outside the shoulder of the roadway.  The Alma man was transported to Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Alma where he remains in critical condition.  Alcohol use is believed to be a factor in the crash.  The Alma man was not wearing a helmet.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services, Mobile Medical Response Ambulance Service, Montcalm County Central Dispatch, and the Crystal Township Fire Department.

The second crash occurred at approximately 8:20 P.M on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, on Berridge Road near Sidney Road in Montcalm Township.  This investigation found a 1999 Cadillac was travelling south on Berridge Road when the driver lost control, and the vehicle left the roadway.  The vehicle overturned multiple times and struck several trees before coming to a rest.  The three occupants, all 17-year-old males from Greenville, were ejected from the vehicle as it overturned.  Two of the teens were taken to Corewell Health Greenville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The third teen was taken to Corewell Health in Grand Rapids with serious injuries.  None of the occupants were wearing seatbelts, and speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.

While this crash was being investigated, the owners of the vehicle contacted the Greenville Department of Public Safety and reported their vehicle as being stolen.  The case has been investigated, and the report will be sent to the Montcalm County Prosecutor’s Office for review for criminal charges.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services, Michigan State Police, Montcalm County Central Dispatch, and the Montcalm Township Fire Department.
