SUMMARY: On Sunday, May 14, 2023, Deputy J. Ballinger responded to a 911 call in Pinon Hills. According to the victims, they were riding in their side by side when a subject started shooting at them.
The victims told Deputy Ballinger they were riding their side by side when they found someone had placed large rocks and made ditches on several of the dirt roads to make them impassable to off road vehicles. When they came to an area near Pinon Hills Elementary School with large ditches and rocks, the driver of the side by side got out of the vehicle. Once outside of the vehicle, he heard gunshots and knew someone was shooting at him. In fear for their safety, they left the area and immediately called 911 from their residence. The victims had no suspect description. Deputy Ballinger went to Pinon Hills Elementary School to look for damage. Since it was a weekend, he was unable to search the entire grounds of the school.
On Monday, May 15, 2023, Deputy Ballinger went to Pinon Hills Elementary School to walk the grounds of the school to see if there was any damage. Deputy Ballinger found one bullet hole in the wall of the school, right next to the playground. While investigating, two subjects rode by on motorcycles and continued on a dirt road southwest of the school. A subject fired three rounds in the direction of the riders and the school, with two of the rounds going over Deputy Ballinger’s head. The school was immediately locked down.
Deputies responded to assist, setting a perimeter around the school to keep the children and staff safe. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Aviation Division responded to assist, and deputies located the suspect, Sean Michael David Garcia, in the yard of his residence in the 600 block of Rancho Road. Garcia was found in possession of 38 guns, including assault rifles, and is prohibited from owning weapons.
Sean Michael David Garcia was arrested without incident and booked at High Desert Detention Center.
