Hudson-Bergen Light Rail weekend advisory

The Hoboken Office of Emergency Management would like to alert residents to weekend boarding changes and schedule adjustments on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, due to track work this weekend. According to NJ Transit, on Saturday, May 20, and Sunday, May 21, track work will result in a double track outage from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily. There will be a bus between the Ninth Street, Lincoln Harbor, and Port Imperial stations. There will be schedule adjustments as well. Normal weekend service is scheduled to resume after 6 p.m. on both days. Passengers can get more information on the schedule adjustments at: https://www.njtransit.com/service-advisory/1607345.

E-bike education campaign continues

The Traffic Bureau of the Hoboken Police Department hosted a successful pop-up E-bike education event on Monday, May 15, as part of the department's National Bicycle Safety Month education and awareness campaign. The goal of this ongoing effort is to remind e-bike riders, specifically the growing number of delivery riders, of the City's laws governing e-bikes and offer safety tips and best practices to keep themselves, and others, safe.

Lt. Keith Rotondi, Sgt. Frank Rosa, Officer Joseph DiMartino, and Officer Nicholas DeTrizio set up a tent on Washington Street between Third and Fourth Streets to engage with community members and riders, many whom they actively stopped to speak with. All are reminded:
  • It is illegal to ride any type of electric or motorized bicycle or scooter on Hoboken’s sidewalks and on parts of the waterfront walkway.
  • If an e-bike enters a sidewalk, the rider must dismount and walk the vehicle.
  • E-bikes can be parked on the sidewalk if it does not block pedestrians or other traffic.
  • When in the street, riders must follow all traffic laws including riding in the correct direction of traffic and following the speed limit.

The Hoboken Police Department believes education goes hand-in-hand with enforcement when promoting safety on city streets and sidewalks. That is why in recent weeks, Hoboken police officers have also issued over 100 summonses and countless warnings to e-bike riders. Violators face fines of up to $100.

Bicycle patrol is back

Hoboken residents can expect to see Hoboken Police Officers on two-wheels this spring and summer. The PD has re-activated its Bicycle Deployment for the season. Officers will patrol parts of the waterfront and Washington Street, focusing on quality-of-life issues, bicycle safety and e-bike/e-scooter education and enforcement. The deployments are weather and staffing dependent. The PD hopes to train more officers on bicycle patrol in upcoming months.
