PRESS RELEASE: Police Response to Bomb Threat; Man Arrested After Standoff
On May 17, 2023, at approximately 12:52 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Days Inn, 185 North Tully Road, regarding a call of a bomb threat. Officers met with hotel management who reported the cleaning staff discovered a room was still occupied by a guest, despite being well past checkout time. The guest refused to leave and reported to staff he had a bomb with him while inside the bathroom.
Hotel management requested the man, identified as 55-year-old Turlock resident, Raymond Hansen Jr., be removed from the room and prosecuted for trespassing.
Officers attempted to make contact with Hansen, but he refused to comply with orders to exit the room. Due to the possibility of Hansen having an explosive device, officers on scene did not immediately enter the hotel room. Several of the guests in the adjacent hotel rooms had to be evacuated, while officers surrounded Hansen’s location and attempted to negotiate with him.
Turlock Police Hostage Negotiators responded to the scene, along with members of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (S.W.A.T.). After several hours of attempting to negotiate with Hansen, S.W.A.T. officers entered the hotel room after deploying chemical agents. Hansen eventually surrendered to officers and exited the bathroom.
After officers were able to observe Hansen and the contents of the restroom, it was determined no explosive device was present. Extensive damage to the restroom and flooding to the hotel room were a result of Hansen’s actions. Hansen was provided after care for his exposure to the chemical agents. Hansen was booked at the Stanislaus County Jail and charged with making a false bomb threat, trespass, felony vandalism, a parole violation and failing to register as a sex offender. He remains in custody without bail.
