Incident Summary

On 05/17/2023 at approximately 11:54 A.M., Petaluma officers responded to a report of a Petaluma man being struck a number of times with a baseball bat by another male subject. On the officers arrival, they located the victim, who had minor injuries. He reported he had been sitting on a park bench at Steamer landing, when a male subject approached him and began to repeatedly hit him with a baseball bat.

After being hit a number of times, the suspect fled the area on foot and the victim called 9-1-1. The victim refused treatment on scene and suffered only minor injuries. During the investigation, officers were able to identify the suspect as Jason Weiland. Officers continued to search for Weiland but were unsuccessful.

At approximately 11:18 P.M., Community Impact Response Team officers were conducting patrols in the area of Steamer Landing, looking for Weiland and contacting encampments that community members had been reporting as a nuisance to the Petaluma Police Department. CIRT Officers searched an area Weiland had been known to stay at and located him with another female transient. He was taken into custody by the CIRT Officers without incident.

After being placed under arrest, Weiland was transported to the Sonoma County Jail where he was booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The motive for the assault is still under investigation.
