Meridian Police Remind Drivers and Riders: Motorcyclist Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility
MERIDIAN- As the unofficial start of summer road travel season begins, the Meridian Traffic Unit would like to remind residents to share the road and be alert to prevent motorcycle crashes. Safe riding and driving practices, and cooperation from all road users, will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on Meridian roadways.

Since 2018, there have been 148 collisions involving motorcyclists in the city of Meridian with 29 reported in 2022; including one motorcycle Officer who was struck by a driver. The city of Meridian has averaged 30 motorcycle collisions per year in the past five years.
“Motorcycle safety is crucial. As warm weather arrives, more motorcycles will be out on the road. Look twice, give them space, and be cautious,” said Traffic Corporal Randy Goodspeed. “Motorcyclists also need to stay vigilant in protecting themselves and knowing state law regarding motorcycles. Splitting lanes on a motorcycle may seem like a time-saver, but it's also illegal in the state of Idaho. Let’s work together to prevent accidents and keep everyone safe.”
Safe driving and riding practices from all road users; drivers and riders alike will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our nation’s highways. Motor vehicle drivers and motorcyclists should keep the following tips in mind when on the road:
•           Observe all traffic laws and always obey the speed limit.
•           Drive and ride alcohol- and drug-free.
•           Avoid distractions that place other road users at risk.
•           Yield to motorcyclists, especially while turning at intersections.
•           Wear high-visibility personal protective gear and DOT compliant motorcycle helmets.

Additionally, the completion of a rider education and training course can ensure a safer riding experience. As summer approaches, let’s commit to safe driving and riding, and to our role in ensuring a safe motorcycle-riding environment.
