The following is a synopsis of crimes reported for the week of May 14, 2023 – May 20, 2023.

May 16, 2023
  • Grand Theft Auto:
1900 Block of Earlington Avenue. Between May 12, 2023 12:30 AM and May 16, 2023 10:35 AM, suspect(s) unknown stole the victim's parked vehicle, a blue 2019 Chevy Camero. No surveillance video is available.

 May 18, 2023
  • Burglary (Vehicle):
1565 Central Avenue (Duarte High School). On May 18, 2023 at 5 PM, suspects unknown, a male wearing a black hat, white medical mask, grey sweater, gray pants, and black shoes, and a female wearing a red hat, light blue medical mask, and a low-cut V-neck white t-shirt driving a newer black model VW Jetta followed the victim to the location possibly from Chase bank. Once the victim was out of view, the male suspect shattered the front driver-side window and reached into the vehicle, and took an envelope of money from the steering wheel area. The loss was approximately $800. Surveillance video is available. 
 
May 19, 2023
  • Burglary (Commercial):
1828 Evergreen Street (Ingels Engineering). On May 19, 2023 between 12 AM and 10:25 AM, suspect(s) unknown shattered the front window and made entry to the location. The suspect(s) ransacked the front desk area and stole three computers and miscellaneous items. The loss was approximately $17,000. No surveillance video is available. 
 
  • Burglary (Commercial):
1263 Huntington Drive (Starbucks). On May 19, 2023 at 11:40 AM, the suspect, a known transient who frequents the location, a male black adult (Myron), was observed inside the location next to the customer pick-up area. The suspect selected a sandwich and another customer's drink and exited the location without paying. The manager was able to retrieve the sandwich. However, the suspect continued to walk away with the drink. Deputies arrived and detained the suspect a short distance away. Surveillance video is available.

  1. Target Hardening - Making your property harder for an offender to access
    • Upgrading the locks on your doors, windows, sheds, and outbuildings
    • Using secure passwords to prevent criminals from hacking your online accounts
  2. Target Removal - Ensuring that potential crimes of opportunity are out of view
    • Not leaving items in view through your windows- i.e. laptops, phones, keys, bags
    • Putting your vehicle in the garage if you have one and not leaving valuables on display
    • Being cautious about what you post online as it may be used to identify or locate you offline
  3. Reducing the Means - Removing items that may help commit an offense
    • Don’t leave items lying around that could be used to force entry into your vehicle or house
    • Not leaving tools and ladders in plain view
    • Trim back shrubbery hiding doors or windows
  4. Reducing the Payoff - Reducing the profit the criminal can make from the offense
    • Marking your property in such a way that others will not want to buy it from the thief
    • Inscribing your initials on property in several locations
    • Never buy property you believe or suspect to be stolen
