Lapeer, MI – Today at 4:00pm, our Administration was in contact with numerous fire chiefs in Lapeer County regarding the extremely dry conditions throughout the area.  Due to these potentially hazardous conditions, we are taking a proactive measure and enacting an OPEN BURNING BAN for Lapeer Township, Mayfield Township, and Oregon Township.  Effective immediately all valid burn permits are temporarily suspended, and all open burning shall immediately cease until the open burning ban is lifted.  Please note that the City of Lapeer does not allow opening burning within the city limits at any time.
 
Cooking fires and contained campfires are still permissible.  However, these fires must be continuously monitored and fully extinguished once finished.
 
Definition of a cooking fire: a fire which is used exclusively for cooking and is contained within a portable or stationary wood burning unit that is surrounded on all sides.  These fires must be no larger than 3’ x 3’ and shall not burn longer than three hours.
 
Definition of contained campfire:  a fire which is contained within a portable or stationary wood burning unit that is surrounded on all sides.  These fires must be no larger than 3’ x 3’ and shall not burn longer than three hours.
 
Numerous jurisdictions within Lapeer County have enacted an open burning restriction.  Please check with your local fire department to determine if your area has any burning restrictions.
