Advisory

GPF Public Safety is providing an update on yesterday's Pier Park incident.

On Friday, June 2, at approximately 11:06 AM, the Grosse Pointe Farms Department of Public Safety was notified about a suspicious looking metal object discovered at the Grosse Pointe Farms Pier Park. A park employee had found the object near the pedestrian drop-off area and thrown it into the lake. Further investigation revealed that the object was approximately 5-6 inches long and resembled a pipe bomb. The area was secured, and technicians from the Michigan State Police, ATF, and the Detroit Bomb Squad were called for assistance.

The Grosse Pointe Farms Dive Team recovered the object, which was examined, confirmed to be a pipe bomb, and safely neutralized by technicians on scene. Pier Park was evacuated and closed for the remainder of the day to allow for a comprehensive sweep of the grounds and buildings.

Officers from Grosse Pointe City, Grosse Pointe Shores, and K-9 units from the West Bloomfield Police Department, Bloomfield Township Police Department, Michigan State Police and Grosse Pointe Farms assisted in searching and clearing the park. No other dangerous objects were found. The park was reopened on Saturday, June 3 and resumed regular hours of operation. The incident remains under investigation.
