Advisory

ELFD has issued a burning ban until further notice due to dry conditions and lack of rain. Violations are a misdemeanor.

The Fire Prevention Bureau of the East Lansing Fire Department (ELFD) has issued a ban on open burning due to dry conditions and lack of rain in the area. The ban is in effect until further notice.

The burning ban applies to all open burning, including recreational fires, bonfires and fires in portable outdoor fireplaces/firepits. The ban covers all property within the City of East Lansing, including properties transferred pursuant to Public Act 425 agreements. Furthermore, no new outdoor burn permits will be issued until further notice.

“The consequences of a fire growing out of control can be severe for our community, which is why we have issued this burning ban until further notice,” said ELFD Fire Marshal John Newman. “We thank our community members in advance for their attention to this matter. By refraining from having a fire now, community members are keeping their neighbors and other properties safe.”

Violations of the burning ban are a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of not more than $500 plus court costs and cost of prosecution, or by imprisonment not to exceed 90 days, or both a fine and imprisonment. Each day that a violation continues after notice has been served shall be deemed a separate offense.
