University Avenue (Shorewood Boulevard – University Bay Drive)
GENERAL PROJECT INFORMATION
University Avenue is being reconstructed from Shorewood Boulevard/Hill Street to University Bay Drive/Farley Avenue. The project includes reconstruction of pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalk, street lighting, traffic signals, water main, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer. Pedestrian and bicycle connectivity, bus rapid transit initiatives, and stormwater drainage will be improved, and the project will include a new pedestrian/bike overpass of University Bay Drive, a widened sidewalk along the southerly side of University Avenue, and a 96-inch storm sewer pipe to help improve drainage in the area.
WORK THE WEEK OF JUNE 12, 2023
- An overnight closure of University Bay Dr. to install the pedestrian overpass steel truss bridge is scheduled to begin at 7 PM on Friday June 16, 2023, and the roadway is anticipated to be reopened by 7 AM on Saturday June 17, 2023. - Traffic will remain in the current traffic configuration until approximately July 2023. - Roadway work will continue on the west side of University Bay Dr. and on the north side of University Ave. from Shorewood Blvd. to University Bay Dr.
- Work on the pedestrian overpass bridge decks and retaining walls on both the east and west sides of University Bay Dr. will continue during the week.
- Installation of 96-inch storm sewer on the north side of the roadway will continue between the Marshall Ct./University Ave. intersection and Shorewood Blvd.
- Please note that University Ave. off-peak (9 AM–3 PM) single-lane closures in both the eastbound and westbound directions may be required during the week.

- Roadway work will continue on the west side of University Bay Dr. and on the north side of University Ave. from Shorewood Blvd. to University Bay Dr.
- Work on the pedestrian overpass bridge decks and retaining walls on both the east and west sides of University Bay Dr. will continue during the week.
- Installation of 96-inch storm sewer on the north side of the roadway will continue between the Marshall Ct./University Ave. intersection and Shorewood Blvd.
TRAFFIC / PEDESTRIAN / BIKE IMPACTS
A detour of the multi-use path on the north side of University Ave. between Shorewood Blvd. and Highland Ave. will be in place until approximately the middle of July 2023. A map of the detour route can be found at:

Sidewalk and pedestrian crosswalk adjustments, as well as minor changes to Madison Metro Transit bus stop locations, will occur periodically. Please be alert for sidewalk closed and sidewalk detour signage identifying pedestrian routes. Temporary bus stop signage will also be in place identifying any changes to bus stop locations. Note that the work is weather dependent and may be subject to change.
