Calaveras County Sheriff's Office CANINE Unit Attends the 2023 San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office CANINE Trial

San Andreas – On Saturday June 10th, the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office Canine Unit showcased their skills and dedication as they participated in the highly competitive 2023 San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office Canine Trial. This year's event was dedicated to honoring SJCSO Canine Duke, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. With over twenty canine teams from across the state competing, the event served as a platform for law enforcement canines and handlers to demonstrate their capabilities.
Sergeant Moser and Canine Nox, as well as Corporal Buie and Canine Titan, represented the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office with utmost professionalism. They participated in two main categories: narcotics detection and patrol operations.
In the narcotics detection category, the canine teams exhibited their precision and expertise in locating hidden narcotics through multiple vehicle searches and building searches. The events were timed and evaluated by a panel of judges. Sergeant Moser and Nox secured third place overall in the narcotics event. Additionally, their efficiency in vehicle searches earned them a notable fifth place in that specific category.
Corporal Buie and Titan demonstrated their excellence in the vehicle narcotic search event, securing second place. Their meticulous search techniques and effective collaboration reflected their commitment to upholding the highest standards in law enforcement.
The patrol operations category encompassed various challenging tasks, including an agility course, obedience exercises, area search, and four scenarios with a 15-second time limit each. The scenarios involved a call-off (the act of instructing or “calling off” a dog not to bite after being released), jumping into an open window to apprehend a decoy, jumping into a truck bed to apprehend a decoy, and jumping over a wall into a pool of water to apprehend a decoy. Despite the intense competition, Buie and Titan delivered a commendable performance, achieving fourth place in the area search event.
The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office Canine Unit expresses its gratitude to the organizers of the 2023 San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office Canine Trial for providing a platform that highlights the abilities of law enforcement canine teams statewide. The Office also extends its heartfelt condolences to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office for the loss of Canine Duke, whose dedication and sacrifice will always be remembered.
The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office is committed to maintaining the safety and security of the community through the diligent enforcement of the law. The Canine Unit plays a vital role in supporting law enforcement efforts and ensuring the well-being of the residents of Calaveras County.
