CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

SOCIAL MEDIA HYGIENE by LASD Fraud & Cyber Crimes Bureau (Part 1)

Why Is This Important?
  •  Safety: Your social media posts may reveal who you are and where you live.
  •  Negative Effects: Your social media posts may negatively affect your career and your professional reputation.
  •  Identity Theft: Your social media posts may contain enough information for criminals to impersonate you.
  •  There is no ‘Delete’ Button on the Internet: Remember, once something is posted on the Internet, people can screenshot it, search engines can store it, social networking sites can save it, and it is never going away. Do Your Part, #BeCyberSmart.
  •  Self-Assessment: Attempt to locate yourself. This exercise will help determine how much personal information about you is available online. Below are some standard tools to search for your name, D.O.B, email addresses, and phone number.
  • Online search engines: Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Yandex.
  • People search tools: Truepeoplesearch.com, whitepages.com, spydialer.com, usphonebook.com, familytreenow.com, spytox.com, searchpeoplefree.com, number.com, and webmii.com.
