Attempted Murder Investigation and Arrest

On June 25, 2023, at approximately 6:45 p.m., a shooting occurred in the 7500 block of Burton Avenue in Rohnert Park. The shooting was not reported to the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety or any other public safety agency at the time it occurred.
 
On June 26, 2023, at approximately 11:00 a.m., the victim reported the shooting to the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety, and an investigation began immediately. Based on the investigation, it was determined the suspect followed the victim to the 7500 block of Burton Avenue, where they each remained in their respective vehicles and engaged in a verbal confrontation. During that verbal confrontation, the suspect pointed a handgun at the victim and fired one gunshot that struck the driver’s side door of the victim’s vehicle. The suspect then fled the scene in an unknown direction. The victim was not injured, and no other injuries have been report by anyone at this time.
 
On June 28, 2023, Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety Detectives, with assistance from the Petaluma Police Department, located the suspect, the suspect’s vehicle, and a handgun in the 300 block of Eastwood Drive in Petaluma. The suspect, identified as Richard Brandon Meza (a 30-year-old resident of Petaluma), was taken into custody without incident for one felony count of 664/187 PC – Attempted Murder, one felony count of 422(a) PC – Criminal Threats, one felony count of 29800(a)(1) – Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and one felony count of 30305(a)(1) PC – Felon in Possession of Ammunition. Meza was booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility and is being held on a $1,000,000 bail.
