Stay Safe This Fourth of July
As you’re getting your grill and hot dogs ready, we have several important reminders to keep you, your family, and the community safe this 4th of July.
Fireworks are illegal in Los Altos, including the use of safe and sane fireworks. Fireworks can lead to serious injuries, dangerous fires, and are scary for pets, young children, and veterans. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is from a distance; plan to attend an outdoor public display conducted by specially trained professionals. If you observe fireworks being used in your neighborhood or other areas in the City, please call the 24/7 Police Non-Emergency Line at (650) 947-2770. Please do not dial 9-1-1 unless you are experiencing an emergency.
If you're still looking for ways to celebrate, the City is holding its Annual Glorious 4th Celebration from 10 AM-2 PM tomorrow at Shoup Park with live music and family-friendly activities. Food is available for purchase.
We remind pet owners that more pets get lost on the 4th of July than on any other day of the year. Please keep your pets inside; the loud noises and bright flashes can cause pets to flee. Here are more helpful tips for creating a calm environment during tomorrow night’s festivities:
- Take long walks earlier in the day. Make sure your pets have gone to the bathroom to cut unnecessary trips outside when fireworks are lighting off.
- Make a safe space in their crate by including toys and blankets for comfort.
- Play soft, calming music to mask the noise. Close doors, windows, and shades to dampen loud noises and bright lights.
- Be sure your pet is wearing a visible, up-to-date ID tag on their collar. Have a current photo of your pet, if they do become lost.
We hope everyone has a memorable and safe Independence Day!
