Brandishing Suspect Assaults Deputy and Officer During Arrest, Arnold
On July 4th, 2023, at approximately 11:00 a.m., the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office responded to an incident involving a suspect brandishing a knife at the Sierra Meadows Apartments located on Longman Lane in Arnold, CA.
Upon arrival at the apartment complex, deputies initiated an investigation with the reporting party and victim. It was reported that a 32-year-old individual, Casey Martin, was brandishing a knife and posing a direct threat to the safety of the residents. While the deputies were conducting their investigation, Suspect Martin passed through the area on a scooter heading towards his apartment. It should be noted that Martin was already a wanted individual, facing felony burglary charges from a prior investigation conducted a week earlier.
The deputies from the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office established verbal contact with Martin, who was standing outside his apartment. However, Martin chose to ignore the deputies and proceeded to enter his apartment. The deputies pursued him into his apartment, where he subsequently barricaded himself inside a room for approximately 15 minutes. Eventually, Martin offered a peaceful surrender and communicated with the deputies and an officer from the Angels Camp Police Department in the apartment hallway.
During the attempt to make the arrest, the suspect managed to escape from the apartment and initiated a physical assault on one of the deputies as well as the assisting officer, within the lawn area of the premises. Deputies deployed a trained canine unit, which worked in conjunction with the deputies to successfully apprehend Martin. The suspect sustained injuries during the altercation and was transported to a local area hospital for treatment.
Both the deputy and the Angels Camp officer suffered injuries as a result of the assault by Martin. They received medical care at a local area hospital, were subsequently released, and are expected to make a full recovery.
Martin has since been booked into the Calaveras County Jail and is currently facing charges of assault with serious injury on a peace officer, obstructing or resisting an officer, brandishing a weapon, and aggravated mayhem. Additionally, he has been booked for the previous felony burglary charges.
As the investigation into this incident continues, the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office urges anyone with additional information regarding this incident or the suspect to contact their office.
