Press Release on behalf of the West Covina Fire Department regarding Vegetation Fire

On July 4, 2023, at approximately 10:33 pm a vegetation fire started on the undeveloped parcels adjacent to the cul-de-sac off Fairgrove Avenue and Aroma Drive. West Covina firefighters observed the fire while they were helping close the 4th of July event at the West Covina Sportsplex. The area where the fire started is private property above the Sportsplex. Prior to the fire, the West Covina Police Department responded to a call near the same area for illegal fireworks in addition, officers had to remove a crowd of trespassers on the private property where the fire later occurred.
West Covina Fire Department quickly responded with fire department units and found a small vegetation area, between two concrete drainage ditches, on fire. The fire was quickly contained and completely extinguished in twenty minutes. Approximately 0.25 acres burned, no property was damaged, and no one was injured during the incident. Illegal and dangerous fireworks were located near the spot of the fire’s origin.
The Fire is currently under investigation, and the West Covina Fire Department is asking for anyone with information that would lead to the identity of the person(s) that were setting off fireworks in that area to call (626) 939-8824.
