New Crime Fighting Technology
Have you noticed the new cameras being installed around the city? The El Cerrito Police Department is excited to be working with Flock Safety and installing Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras throughout El Cerrito.
The cameras were approved by the City Council at the regularly scheduled City Council Meeting on March 21, 2023. Prior to City Council approval, the El Cerrito Police Department hosted the first public meeting on November 9, 2022. This was followed by a publicized and scheduled a presentation to the El Cerrito Crime Prevention Committee on February 6, 2023. The Crime Prevention Committee endorsed the plan to deploy ALPR cameras in El Cerrito during this meeting.
The cameras are a valuable tool used to develop leads, solve crimes, and enhance safety in El Cerrito. The cameras are designed to take pictures of the rear of vehicles and license plates. The cameras take photos, not video, and images are deleted after 30 days.
The El Cerrito Police Department looks forward to maximizing this new technology to solve crime and keep El Cerrito safe.
