Highway 92 Hazardous Material Spill Alert Update

UPDATE (3:37 p.m.)
This incident remains the jurisdiction of the California Highway Patrol. San Mateo PD and San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department are on scene and assisting CHP.

The Fire Department has identified the hazardous material spill as sodium bisulfite. The CDC reports it causes irritation to eyes, skin, and mucous membranes if inhaled, ingested, or comes in contact with eyes or skin. The CDC recommends irrigating your eyes immediately if you have direct contact with it, breathing in fresh air, and seeking medical attention if the liquid is swallowed.

If you drove through the spill, on Highway 92, the material is a very low risk. It is slightly corrosive, and it should be washed off your car with lots of water.

Shelter in place has been lifted for those within 1/4 miles of the incident.

Traffic Impact
During the clean-up, 19th Avenue from Grant to S Norfolk will remain closed until the morning of July 14, 2023. Grant will be shut down from 19th Avenue to Concar.

Eastbound 92 west of Hwy 101 will remain closed through the evening commute to due to a hazardous material spill.

Please avoid the area and plan your commute accordingly. The affected school has relocated students to a different campus.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE (11:47 a.m.)
A hazardous material spill has been reported on eastbound Highway 92 just west of Highway 101. Public safety officials are on scene evaluating the liquid spill and are asking surrounding locations to shelter in place. 

19th Avenue is shut down in both directions from Grant Street to S Norfolk Street. Updates will be provided via Nixle's emergency alert platform.
