Man in Jail Custody Dies at Hospital 
A man ordered into jail custody died over the weekend after being hospitalized with a preexisting medical condition.
Oscar Villazana, 49, who had been charged with assault - family violence and booked into jail on Oct. 3, 2022, was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital on July 13, 2023. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance for a medical emergency. Villazana died on July 16, 2023, at 10:14 p.m.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the circumstances of the man’s death in accordance with a state law that requires all jail deaths to be investigated by an independent law enforcement agency.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs Division has initiated an investigation to ensure that all applicable policies and procedures were followed. Such investigations are standard practice in these cases.
The cause of death will be determined through an autopsy conducted by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office has reported the death to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, as required by law.
