Advisory

A contractor working for Byram Township will be performing chip seal of roadways Mon July 24, 2023 weather permitting

A contractor working for Byram Township will be performing Chip seal of the roadways in the following neighborhoods on Monday July 24, 2023, weather permitting.

  • Forest Lakes
    • Sherwood Forest
  • Cranberry Lake
    • South Shore Rd.
  • Lake Lackawanna
    • Bank St
    • Pine Point
The Township has elected to perform this application to your roadway to extend the lifespan and integrity of the roads while waiting for the gas companies to install main in your area. Rather than pave the roadway only to have it be damaged by gas main installation, the township deemed this was an appropriate alternative to extend the roadway’s life at a minimal cost. Once the gas main and services are installed, the Township has plans to pave the roadways at which time a 5-year moratorium will be placed on digging in the roadways.

The Chip Seal application will consist of the placement of emulsified asphalt and a layer of 1/4 inch stone on the roadway.  This will provide a waterproof membrane to repel moisture from entering the sub-grade and adds elasticity to prevent reflective cracking from showing through the new surface.   Access to properties will be maintained during construction. However, residents should drive slowly over the oil and chip surface because there will be loose stone.  Residents, pets and bicycles are not recommended to use roadways while the oil is wet because asphalt is difficult to remove from clothing, rugs, etc.  All vehicles/trailers/boats must be removed from roadways between the hours of 7am to 6pm.  We also ask that you notify any contractors/landscapers/delivery drivers that there will be closings and delays.

Byram Township thanks the residents for their patience during this project.  Township police and employees will be in the area to help direct traffic and ensure safe passage.  If you have questions regarding this project, or have special needs, please contact Department of Public Works Superintendent Michael Orgera at 973-347-2500 x137 or via email at [email protected].
