***UPDATE***
Edwin Sanchez, an 18-year-old resident of Gilroy, was identified as a suspect in this homicide investigation.  On 7/21/23 at approximately 7:20 pm, Sanchez was taken into custody by the Gilroy Police Department in the 900 block of First Street without incident.

On 7/20/23 at approximately 8:58 pm, a member of the Gilroy Police Department was at Saint Louise Hospital on an unrelated detail when a victim of a gunshot wound was brought to the hospital for medical aid.  Hospital staff immediately provided life-saving measures, but despite their efforts the victim succumbed to their injuries.

The identity of the decedent is being withheld at this time pending notification to the next of kin.  Preliminary investigations indicate the incident occurred in the 2100 block of Columbine Court.  The Gilroy Police Department does not believe there is a threat to the safety of the general public.
