City of Hoboken continues expansion of citywide EV-charging network

The City of Hoboken today began installing the first eight of 25 new electric vehicle charging stations through a contract with Volta. These stations, combined with the existing 11 City-owned publicly accessible charging stations, will ensure that residents across the city are within a 5-minute walk of a public charging station by 2030.

The charging stations, including four level 2 chargers, and four DC fast chargers, will be located at ResilienCity Park, Monroe Arts Center, Columbus Park, and the Southwest Resiliency Park. They are expected to be available for public use before the end of the year. DC fast chargers can charge a vehicle's battery from 20 percent to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes. A level 2 charger will add about 20 to 25 miles of range per hour.

The first phase of construction began on 10th Street between Clinton Street and Grand Street this week as project teams started work to install two level 2 charging stations. Construction will continue to take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during weekdays over the next two weeks. Parking will be temporarily restricted on part of 10th Street between Clinton Street and Grand Street, and the Hoboken Police Department will manage traffic control in the area.

Vehicle registration records indicate that there are currently over 1,600 electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) registered to Hoboken residents, and this number is predicted to triple by 2025.

Expanding the accessibility of electric vehicle charging infrastructure is a key initiative within the City's Climate Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become carbon neutral by 2050.

The new charging stations are made possible through a partnership with Volta in which the company will install 25 EV charging stations at no cost to the Hoboken taxpayer.
