Advisory

Excessive Heat Warning in effect. Cooling Centers to Open.

The National Weather Service has issued the following Excessive Heat Warning

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 9 PM EDT FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 105 expected.

* WHERE...Bergen, Eastern Passaic, Hudson, Essex, and Union counties.

* WHEN...From 11 AM this morning to 9 PM EDT Friday.

* IMPACTS...Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses,  particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

An Excessive Heat Warning is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 105 degrees or greater. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible, and drink plenty of water.

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoors.

Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.

IF YOU ARE UNDER A HEAT ADVISORY:
Find air conditioning. Do not use electric fans when the temperature outside is more than 95 degrees, as this could increase the risk of heat-related illness. Fans create air flow and a false sense of comfort, but do not reduce body temperature.

Avoid strenuous activities.

Watch for heat illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Seek medical attention or call 9-1-1 if you, a family member, or neighbor are experiencing one of these
Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.

Check on family members and neighbors, particularly those who are elderly and handicapped. Make sure they are keeping as cool as possible and drinking plenty of water.

Drink plenty of fluids. If you or someone you care for is on a special diet, ask a doctor how best to accommodate it. Also, alcoholic beverages, while refreshing, can cause dehydration and lead to a heat related illness.

Never leave a child, adult, or animal alone inside a vehicle.

COOLING CENTERS

Due to the current Heat Warning, the Carlstadt Office of Emergency Management will be opening cooling centers from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM today through Saturday. The cooling centers are located at:

  • Carlstadt Civic Center – 425 Fourth Street
  • Carlstadt Borough Hall – 500 Madison Street – 2nd Floor Council Chambers

Please note that the cooling centers will only offer a place to stay cool. The only refreshments to be offered are bottled water. Food and any other beverage will be reh responsibility of the individual using the cooling center.
