On Monday, July 31, 2023, at approximately 6:54 p.m., officers from the Whittier Police Department were conducting surveillance on murder suspect, Edgar Gonzalez (25 years old). Gonzalez was identified as being the shooter in a murder on July 30th, that occurred in the city of Santa Fe Springs.
While surveilling the suspect, the officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop in the rear alley of the 7300 block of Pickering Ave. After several callouts, the suspect exited his vehicle and ran from officers. Officers initiated a foot pursuit of the suspect between two apartment complexes where an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect continued running southbound on Pickering Ave., where he discarded a semi-automatic handgun, then continued running west on Mar Vista Ave. from Pickering Ave.
Officers deployed a less lethal 40mm baton round and a K9 before the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. One Whittier police officer sustained two non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to his lower extremities. The suspect sustained a gunshot wound to one hand.
Both the officer and suspect were transported to a local hospital where they are in stable condition.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide investigators are assisting Whittier Police Department regarding an Officer-Involved Shooting investigation. The incident was reported Monday, July 31, 2023 at approximately 8:40 PM, on the 7300 block of Pickering Ave., in the city of Whittier
Officers were conducting a traffic stop when an Officer-Involved shooting occurred.
An officer and suspect both sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a local area hospital where they are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
