Incident Summary:

On Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at approximately 3:25 PM, Petaluma Police officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of San Rafael Drive for an aggressive dog that had bitten a citizen and was running loose in the neighborhood.

Two Petaluma Police officers arrived on scene and exited their vehicles to assess the victims’ injuries. As the officers exited their vehicles, the dog aggressively charged at them. Both officers deployed their tasers at the dog to prevent it from attacking them. The dog then retreated to a yard in the area. Additional Petaluma Police Officers arrived on scene were able to contain the dog until the dog’s owner arrived.

Due to the dog’s aggressive behavior and it running loose in a neighborhood, residents were asked to shelter in place until the dog could be secured.

Officers on scene were able to extricate the victim from the vicinity of the dog to awaiting Petaluma Fire Department Paramedics. The victim sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

North Bay Animal Services, who the City of Petaluma contracts with for animal control services, was called to the scene and initiated an investigation. The dog was placed on a 10-day bite quarantine. North Bay Animal Services will be continuing to follow up with the dog’s owner as their investigation continues.
