GBPD to Host Citizens Police Academy in Fall 2023; Registration Open

The Green Bay Police Department is accepting applications for its next Citizens Police Academy as we share an overview and behind the scenes look at the GBPD with unique experiences.

Participants will learn about specialty divisions, such as the Marine Unit, Dive Team, K9, and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT). They will also hear from law enforcement officers, investigations, recruiting staff, meet the forensics team, test their skills at techniques such as lifting fingerprints along with other hands-on demonstrations including simulation training used by officers.

“If you are curious as to the day-to-day operations of a law enforcement agency and want to learn more about the functions of the GBPD, the Citizens Police Academy is the perfect environment to do those things,” said Melanie Skalmoski, Green Bay Police Department Crime Prevention Coordinator.

This year’s Academy is scheduled for Wednesdays from August 30, 2023, through October 18, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Green Bay City Hall, 100 N. Jefferson Street, in Council Chambers.

It is open to Brown County residents and those from surrounding areas. However, priority registration will be given to Brown County residents and first-time attendees. Class size will be limited to 30 students; therefore, we ask that registrants commit to attending.

To apply, download the application and wavier at https://www.gbpolice.org/1075/Citizens-Academy, contact Crime Prevention at (920) 448-3260 or email [email protected]. Completed forms must be mailed or dropped off at the Green Bay Police Department, 307 S. Adams Street, Green Bay, WI 54301 or emailed to Crime Prevention by Friday, August 25, 2023.

NOTE: Due to the structure of the academy, an application is required, and a criminal background check will be run on each applicant. Anyone with a felony arrest record will not be eligible to attend the Academy. Anyone under the age of 18 will need the signature of a parent or guardian to participate. This course has the possibility to develop media interest, so please know that news outlets may attend.
