This is a volunteer position however officers may be compensated for extra duty assignments that may be authorized by the Chief of Police.
Minimum qualifications for SLEO I personnel include:
All SLEO I personnel must successfully complete a Police Training Commission approved basic training course. Candidates that have been selected by the Leonia Police Department and who have not already completed the training course will be assigned to the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute’s next basic training course. The course will be held September 12, 2023 to December 14, 2023 from 7:00pm until 11:00pm on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Police Department - SLEO Opening
The Leonia Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Special Law Enforcement Officer Class I (SLEO I). Duties of SLEO I personnel include, but are not limited to:
- Parking and Traffic Enforcement
- Traffic direction and control
- Crossings
- Security/spectator control at special events
- Extra duty assignments
- Clerical duties

Minimum qualifications for SLEO I personnel include:
- Must be legally permitted to work in the United States
- Must be a resident of the State of New Jersey during their term of appointment
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be able to read, write and speak the English language well and have a high school diploma or its equivalent
- Must be sound in body and of good health and be able to perform the physical functions of the duties assigned
- Must be of good moral character and shall not have been convicted of any crime or offense involving moral turpitude (dishonesty) or a crime of offense that would render him/her unfit for duty
- Must possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license
