Garbage containerization adopted; Sinatra Drive Summer Streets is Sunday; Police training exercises announced; Be a Green Fair vendor

Council approves garbage containerization
The Hoboken City Council tonight adopted an ordinance by a 5-4 vote to require all residential or mixed-use properties with 10 or fewer units to store trash in containers with a tight-fitting lid when at the curb for collection and while stored between collections. The law aims to help curtail rodent activity by reducing rodent food sources from trash. Additionally, properties with greater than 10 units will also be required to utilize containerized garbage bins with tight-fitting lids unless there are space constraints that prevent the landlord or property owner from doing so. In this case, disposable garbage bags must be used with rodent repellent and at least 1.1 mils thick, or if the garbage bags do not have rodent repellent, the bags must be at least 3 mils thick. If plastic bags are utilized, the garbage must be stored indoors between collections.  The ordinance will take effect on Aug. 24, after which property owners violating the law may be issued a notice of violation. At the following meeting of the City Council, an additional ordinance will be considered that will require all trash to be contained in cans no heavier than 50lbs, as well as including an exception provision for unique circumstances. Please note a full garbage container must not weigh more than 50 pounds per the City's contract with Cali Carting, as garbage hauler employees manually lift trash. As such, Cali Carting recommends that all new garbage containers be no larger than 32 gallons to help keep trash below the weight limit.  The administration is currently exploring options to purchase a large quantity of containerized garbage cans for limited distribution to property owners in the near future.
