After further investigation, IMPD Detectives arrested 40-year-old Alexis Wellington for his role in this incident.
The Marion County Prosecutors office will review the case and make a final charging decision.

The information provided is preliminary and subject to change. 
 
Just before 2:30 a.m. on Friday, August 4, 2023, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) East District officers responded to 3950 Downes Dr. on the report of a domestic disturbance with a weapon.  As officers were responding, they were updated that seven children and two adults were able to exit the residence prior to their arrival.  Just after officer’s arrival, a third adult was able to exit the residence safely, leaving the adult male suspect inside.  Officers established a perimeter and could hear shots being fired inside the residence as they established a perimeter around the house.  Within minutes the suspect began firing shots from inside the residence towards the officers who were positioned outside the residence.  IMPD Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team was requested.  Prior to the SWAT team’s arrival, the suspect surrendered to officers without further incident. 
 
Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) responded.  The suspect was transported to Eskenazi Hospital for an injury unrelated to officer actions in addition to a medical checkout.
 
No officers discharged their duty weapon during this incident. 
 
No officer or uninvolved citizens were injured as a result of this incident.  Detectives are confident there is not an ongoing threat to the community. 
 
Officers located a handgun inside the residence (photos of the firearms are attached).  
 
The officer’s body-worn cameras were activated during this incident. 
 
The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to identify and collect potential forensic evidence. 
 
The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.
 
The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency is assisting with this investigation.
