Help Prevent Catalytic Converter Theft

Remember to keep a watchful eye out for catalytic converter theft. A simple way to check if the catalytic converter is stolen is to turn on your car for at least 2 minutes. You will know right away; it will sound like you don't have a muffler at all, similar to a motorcycle. Please help eliminate the opportunity for these crimes and keep your catalytic converter from potential risk.

1. Park your car in a garage to ensure that access to your vehicle’s catalytic converter is more difficult.
2. Try to park in a location that is well-lit and overlooked.
3. Possibly engrave your Vehicle Identification Number on the catalytic converter, which may alert a recycling center that it was stolen.
4. Calibrate your car’s alarm to alert when it detects the vibration.
5. Home video surveillance can also help to identify suspects committing this crime.
6. Do not confront suspects, as they may be violent. Be a good witness: collect suspect descriptions, vehicle descriptions and license plates, and wait for police.
7. If you see something suspicious, call the Fremont Police Non-Emergency at (510)790-6800 ext 3.
8. If you’re witnessing a crime in process and during all emergencies, call 911.
